Background

Professor Nigel Healey is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the College of Business and Economics, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International). Prior to joining the University of Canterbury in 2004, Healey was Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (2000-04), Head of Department of Business Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University (1996-2000) and, before that, Director of the Centre for European Economic Studies and Jean Monnet Chair in the Department of Economics at the University of Leicester (1989-96) in the UK.

His research interests are in economic transition (ie, the marketisation of former centrally-planned economies), regional economic and monetary integration. He has served as an economic policy advisor to the prime minister of Belarus and the deputy minister of economy of the Russian Federation and managed a number of multinational research and educational development projects in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. His recent research has focused on the internationalisation of higher education, with particular reference to the Asia-Pacific region.

Healey is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), the Chartered Management Institute (UK) and the New Zealand Institute of Management and a member of the Institute of Directors of New Zealand. He is a long-standing member of the European Association for International Education and currently chairs the conference organising committee for the Asia-Pacific Professional Leaders in Education (QS-APPLE), an annual conference for Asia-Pacific university presidents and senior policymakers tracking developments in regional higher education. He was a member of the Executive of the UK's Association of Business Schools (2001-04) and he served as a chair of the Board of Studies and a member of the Management Development Committee for the Chartered Management Institute (2002-04), as well as the UK National Forum for Employers and Business School Deans (2003-04). He is presently a member of the International Accreditation Advisory Board of the Association of MBAs (AMBA), a non-executive director of the Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Executive of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM).
