College of Business and Economics

Commerce Centenary Celebration

Over Labour Weekend 2006, the College of Business and Economics proudly celebrated the centenary of our major undergraduate programme the Bachelor of Commerce. The celebrations commenced with a cocktail party at the Christchurch Art Gallery with the now National Party Leader and Canterbury graduate, John Key, the keynote speaker. The weekend celebrated the achievements of our alumni many of whom attended the various activities that marked the event. A formal tree planting ceremony by Pansy Wong MP and Canterbury graduate concluded the weekend and a commemorative time capsule was unveiled at the College graduation function to 13 December to be reopened in 2056.

In 1905, James Hight, later to become UC’s first professor of history and economics, launched the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), making it one of the oldest undergraduate degrees in business and economics in the English-speaking world. The Bachelor of Commerce, as the original stand alone degree, remains to this day offering many diverse options to reflect the world’s changing business landscape. The College of Business and Economics is well equipped for the future. Professor Clark says the role of the department is to constantly upgrade and evolve. “We are proud of what we teach.”
